Nursing holds the privilege of being a self-regulating profession under the guidelines of the NWT Nursing Profession Act (2003) and the NU Nursing Act (1998). CANNN is the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut that upholds these guidelines for the protection of the public. Mandated by the Acts, CANNN is required to establish committees supported by volunteer members to guide the profession of nursing in our jurisdictions.
Legislated committees are involved in varying aspects of the Association and may be involved in registration or professional conduct decisions, updating policies, or developing documents such as Standards of Practice. Meetings are held monthly or bi-monthly and many members attend virtually. Each committee has a different focus.

- ITEM WRITERS
Item writers create the items (questions) that are administered on the NCLEX-RN. You must be responsible for teaching basic/undergraduate students in the clinical area. NCLEX-RN item writers must have a master’s degree or higher. - ITEM REVIEWERS
Item reviewers examine the items that are created by item writers. You must be currently employed in clinical nursing practice and working directly with nurses who have entered nursing practice during the past 12 months, specifically in a precepting or supervising capacity.

The Board of Directors is composed of:
- ten members consisting of a President, a President-Elect, a Vice-President from the Northwest Territories, a Vice-President from Nunavut, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and four regional members, each of whom are elected in accordance with the Act and
the bylaws, each of whom are active members of the Association and each of whom have voting power; - a member of the public of the Northwest Territories, with voting power, who shall be appointed by the Minister;
- a public representative of Nunavut, with voting power, who shall be appointed by
the Board and; - the Executive Director as a non-voting member.
Regional members shall be elected from the region in which the regional member is employed, in accordance with the bylaws.
In the NWT, one regional member shall be elected from NWT North and one regional member shall be elected from NWT South, except in the event that no member of the Board is employed in Yellowknife, in which case a regional member may be elected from
the Yellowknife region.In Nunavut, one regional member shall be elected from Nunavut East and one regional member shall be elected from Nunavut West.
Public representatives participate in all activies with the Board of Directors such as reviewing documents, and attending meetings approximately 4 times a year. Public representatives bring a unique perspective to planning and helping the Board guide the furture direction of northern nursing. Meetings are hybrid (virtual/in-person).
There are 2 public representative positions on the Board of Directors:
- Public Representative for Northwest Territores
- Public Representative for Nunavut
Public representatives must reside in the Territory they represent.
